Townsend Place is the name of either 1, 2 or 3 terraced houses - located near the top of Ruxley Road (formerly High Street) near to Werrington Road. All houses have been present since at least 1876, and are believed to be the oldest houses on the road - as well as a few of the oldest houses in Bucknall.
The buildings have been present on Ordnance Survey maps dating back to the 19th-century. They are believed to be nearly around 150 years old, which is backed up by a plaque that is situated on the brickwork in the middle of the houses (near to the roof) which states: "TOWNSEND PLACE __ 1876.". It is believed that the plaque belongs to the house situated on the middle in the above photo, but most houses of this era containing plaques refer to 2 or more houses (such as on Trent Villas and Ivy Cottages) which are usually included by the designer and/or builder. Therefore, it is likely that the plaque refers to all houses. All houses have had adjustment to the brickwork over the years, such as shop frontage around the 20th-century, with only slight alterations to the backs of the properties - such as the later addition of interior bathrooms.
