Bucknall House was a large house located at the top of Marychurch Road. At the time of the building being present, the road was named Church Lane - before being renamed to Church Road, and later to its current name of Marychurch Road.
The building was commonly known as Bucknall House, but was also known as Bucknall Hall and St. Mary's Rectory - as well as 'The Big House' when being referred to by local people. When the house was present, there was a condition in the deeds on the land stating that the buildings were forbidden to brew alcohol. This was because they were initially built on church land, lending credence to it having been the rectory at some time. [2]
It is not known when Bucknall House was built, but the house itself and its surrounding buildings were demolished around 1960. There are now 2 semi-detached houses on the corner of Marychurch Road and Ruxley Road (formerly High Street). Whilst there is no resemblance of Bucknall House in the present day, the pavement on Marychurch Road remains lowered to the former entrance of the house. There are no driveways leading to either of the 2 semi-detached houses where the pavement is lowered, indicating that the current pavement path was formed whilst Bucknall House was still present.
There is a carousel of photos below that have been captured and uploaded by Our Bucknall. The name of the photographer and capture date are included in a footer on each photo. You can scroll through the gallery below by using the left and right arrow keys on the side of each photo.
As Bucknall House no longer exists, it is not possible to capture any photos. Instead, photos have been captured of the 2 semi-detached houses that are situated on the land where Bucknall House once stood - as well as the lowered pavement leading to the former driveway.
Samuel Bateman (Founder of Our Bucknall) has been able to capture these photos to be retained for the historical archive project on this website. Photos have been included here in a carousel. You can scroll through the gallery by using the left and right arrow keys on the side of each photo.
We don't currently have any publicly-shared photos of Bucknall House at present, apart from the one present at the top of this page. The historical archive is aimed to grow over the coming years, but we need your content to help us in doing so. If you have any photos of this building that you would like to share, please get in touch with us - and we will provide full credit to your submission(s) in the references list below.
We have embedded an interactive Google Street View map showing the former Bucknall House site in 2022. You can use this interactive map to move around the area, as well as view where the building was located.
